Vijender Singh was born on 29 October 1985 in Kaluwas, a village 5 km from Bhiwani in Haryana, India. He completed his early education from Kalwas.

After finishing his secondary education from Bhiwani, Singh got his Bachelor’s degree from Vaish College. His mother is a house wife. His father, Mahipal Singh Beniwal, has worked hard as a bus driver for the Haryana Roadways. Vijender Singh is now a world renowned boxing champion.

Vijendar Singh and his elder brother Manoj both started learning boxing from an early age. In 1998, his brother became part of the Indian Army on the basis of his boxing credentials. With the passing time, boxing became a passion for Vijendar and he made it his livelihood. The craze of boxing in India began in the year 1990 when the Arjuna Award was given to boxer Raj Kumar Sangwan. In 1997, Vijendar won his first silver medal at the first sub-junior Nationals competition. In 2000, he won his first gold medal at the Nationals competition. Vijendar’s hard work repaid and his popularity increased; in 2003, Vijendar was named the all-India youth boxing champion. This boosted his self-confidence and he participated in the 2003 Afro Asian Games earning a silver medal in the competition. Vijendar was only 18 at the time and was still a junior boxer. He competed in the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics, welter weight division but was defeated against a Turkish opponent. In the 2006 Commonwealth games, he won a bronze medal. In the 2006 Asian Games, the Indian boxing champion Vijender Singh participated in the middleweight division – 75kg and again won a bronze medal.

Vijender Singh kept winning medals and made his way in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Vijender lost in the Semi Finals bringing home the first ever bronze medal won in Indian boxing in the Olympics. The Indian boxing champion Vijender Singh received a heroic victory upon arrival.

In July of 2009, Vijender Singh, along with 2 other participants, was awarded the highest sporting honor Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for his commendable performance in the field of boxing. He also won prize money of Rs 7.5 lakh along with a citation. In the same year, he and Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar were recommended for the Padma Shri award but the awarding committee denied rewarding both champions. This denial resulted in an upheaval among people blaming the committee for nepotism and promotion of favoured sports. Based on his competencies, he was awarded the Padma Shri award in January 2010.

In 2009, Vijendar joined the Haryana Police Department earning a salary of Rs: 14,000 per month. The Indian boxer participated in the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championship but lost in the semifinals. The same year he was on top of the list with 2800 points by the International Boxing Association which rated him as the top middle weight 75kg boxer. Vijendar won numerous medals for his outstanding performance in 2010 and 2011 commonwealth and Asian games. In the 2012 London Olympics, Vijendar lost in the quarter finals. Vijendar Singh also makes regular appearances in reality shows and stage shows on Indian television. He is an inspiration for boxing fans and has a huge fan following.
